How to Jump Your Battery: Easy, Safe Steps

Jumping a dead battery is simple if you follow the right steps:

1. Grab Supplies & Prep

  • Heavy-duty jumper cables (4–6 gauge recommended)
  • A donor car with a charged battery
  • Work gloves & safety glasses

Turn off both vehicles and locate battery terminals.

2. Connect Cables (Positive First!)

  • Red → positive on dead battery
  • Red → positive on donor battery
  • Black → negative on donor battery
  • Black → ground metal surface on dead car (NOT negative terminal)

3. Charge the Dead Battery

Let donor car run 5–10 minutes; rev lightly to increase charging speed.

4. Start & Disconnect

  • Try starting your car (max 10 seconds).
  • Let both cars run 5–10 minutes after starting.
  • Disconnect cables in reverse order.
